CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF READING WITH KIKER KIDS!
WHAT IS ROCKET READERS? (Formerly Camp Read)
Rocket Readers is an award winning program which supports our teacher's wonderful work. We are a volunteer group that helps during school hours with selected students who need a little extra boost with their reading skills. The program is supported by Kiker Administration and PTA, and students are referred to the program by Kiker teachers and administration.
WHY IS THIS PROGRAM SO IMPORTANT?
Reading is the major foundational academic ability for all school-based learning. Early reading intervention can increase reading skills for students by 85-90%, and decreases the percentage of students reading below grade level to 6% or less.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Rocket Readers is run solely by volunteers! We are always looking for parents, grandparents, neighbors, retired teachers, or anyone who wants to help make a difference in the life of a child.
- Volunteer time slots are 30minutes each, and take place during school hours.
- Volunteers will work with students providing early reading intervention to younger students, and assisting older students with reading fluency and comprehension.
- Volunteers go through a background check, and are provided a short training.
- Volunteer recruiting begins at the start of each school year. After teachers and administration determine how many students could benefit from the Rocket Readers program, we then know how many time slots to post and time slot sign-up begins in October.
PROGRAM TESTIMONIALS
Student: “I was supposed to bring something in for Show & Tell that makes me smile. I brought a book because I smile now when I read books. Once I start reading, I don’t want to stop. [Rocket Readers] has helped me feel better about reading books.”
Volunteer: “I LOVE [Rocket Readers]… it took me a while before I was ready to commit to the program as a volunteer. Now I spend an hour of my week working with a student, and find it extremely rewarding!”
Teacher: “I am so happy and grateful for another ‘[Rocket Readers] Success Story!’ One of my student’s accuracy and fluency SKYROCKETED from a DRA score of 20 to a 40! I attribute this progress to thoughtful teaching, one on one attention, and all that is offered by the [Rocket Readers] volunteers. This simply moves mountains!"
